David Thompson Bicentennial Education Program

The Canadian Petroleum Discovery Centre is hosting the educational and interpretive program on Tuesday, May 13 from 9:00 am— 2:00 pm.

Grade 7 Curriculum Based School Programs

Activities include:

  1. Geomorphology of the David Thompson Corridor. Presented by AGS (Alberta Geological Survey)
  2. Surveying. Presented by the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association
  3. Charlotte Small Play
  4. Fur Trade History / Voyageur’s canoe
  5. Voyageur Games

In honor of the life of one of North America's Greatest Land Geographers, David Thompson, the 2008 Brigade is re-enacting his historic 1808 voyage. This journey down the North Saskatchewan River was made to announce his discovery of Howse Pass, a crossing over the Rockies.  160 paddlers in 16 Voyageur canoes descend on Devon on May 13 on day three of their 63 day journey that leads them to Thunder Bay, ON.

To help preserve Alberta’s rich petroleum heritage the Leduc/Devon Oilfield Historical Society will host a dinner and auction at the Canadian Petroleum Discovery Centre. The event will feature a bountiful buffet, live and a silent auction.

Historic Edmonton Week –Roughnecks, Wildcats & Doodlebugs

Learn some oil patch jargon as you tour the 23,000 square foot Museum and Science Centre! The Centre contains artifacts, photos, scale models and colorful stories……all designed to give the viewing public a taste of what it was like to be a part of our oil history! The Leduc #1 well site is just south of the Centre entrance. Working drilling rigs, a service rig, pump jacks and other current historical oilfield equipment bring the site to life. Oilfield veterans are frequently on site, and are eager to meet with visitors to share the stories of the exciting early years of Canada’s oil & gas industry. Pre-registration required.
